Description
Dracaena masoniana (formerly Sansevieria masoniana) is a distinctive succulent foliage plant belonging to the Asparagaceae family. Native to Central Africa, particularly the Democratic Republic of the Congo, it is prized for its exceptionally broad, upright leaves marked with mottled shades of deep green and lighter green patterns.
Often grown from a single leaf, the Whale Fin Snake Plant has become one of the most sought-after architectural houseplants due to its minimalist beauty and remarkable resilience. Its upright growth and sculptural foliage make it an excellent feature plant for modern homes, offices, hotels, and commercial interiors.
Growth Habit
Sansevieria masoniana is a slow-growing evergreen succulent perennial that develops from thick underground rhizomes. Indoors, individual leaves typically reach 60–120 cm (2–4 ft) tall and 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) wide. Mature plants gradually produce offsets, forming attractive clumps over time.
Watering Requirement
Water sparingly, allowing the potting mix to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season, water approximately every 2–4 weeks, depending on temperature and humidity. Reduce watering significantly during winter. Avoid overwatering, as excessive moisture can quickly lead to root rot.
Light Requirement
Thrives in bright indirect light but is highly adaptable to medium and low light conditions. It can tolerate gentle morning sun but should be protected from prolonged harsh afternoon sunlight.
Ideal Placement
Place the Whale Fin Snake Plant in living rooms, offices, bedrooms, hotel lobbies, reception areas, hallways, or bright indoor corners. Its upright architectural form makes it an excellent feature plant for modern interiors, minimalist spaces, and container displays.

Plant Health and Maintenance
Grow in a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix with excellent drainage. Fertilize lightly every 2–3 months during spring and summer using a balanced succulent fertilizer. Repot only when the plant becomes root-bound.
Propagation is easily achieved through rhizome division or leaf cuttings, although variegated forms should be propagated by division to maintain their leaf patterns. Common pests include mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects. Overwatering is the most common cause of root rot and leaf softening.
