Description
Acanthocereus tetragonus 'Fairy Castle' is a distinctive cultivar belonging to the Cactaceae family. Native to tropical regions of Central America and the Caribbean through its parent species, this ornamental cactus is prized for its unusual clustered stems that resemble the towers of a fairy tale castle.
Its upright, branching columns remain compact for many years, making it an attractive architectural feature in homes, offices, balconies, and xeriscape gardens. Under ideal outdoor conditions, mature plants may eventually produce large white nocturnal flowers, although blooming indoors is uncommon.
Growth Habit
The Fairy Castle Cactus is a slow-growing, upright succulent cactus with multiple branching stems arising from the base. It typically reaches 30–90 cm (1–3 ft) in height indoors and develops a dense, castle-like appearance as it matures.
Watering Requirement
Water sparingly, allowing the potting mix to dry out completely between waterings. During spring and summer, water every 2–3 weeks depending on temperature and light conditions. Reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy. Avoid waterlogging, as excessive moisture can cause root rot.
Light Requirement
Thrives in bright indirect light to full sun. For best growth, provide at least 4–6 hours of bright light daily. It performs well near sunny windows and can tolerate direct morning sunlight.
Ideal Placement
Place the Fairy Castle Cactus in bright indoor locations such as windowsills, desks, bookshelves, offices, living rooms, or sunny balconies protected from prolonged heavy rain. It also performs beautifully in succulent arrangements, rock gardens, and modern decorative planters.

Plant Health and Maintenance
Plant in a fast-draining cactus or succulent potting mix with excellent drainage. Fertilize lightly during spring and summer using a cactus fertilizer. Repot only when root-bound, as the plant prefers slightly confined roots.
Propagation is easily achieved through stem cuttings. Common pests include mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems and may lead to root rot or stem softening.
