Description
Native to the tropical regions of Colombia, Philodendron erubescens 'Pink Princess' is a member of the Araceae family. It is a hemiepiphyte, meaning it naturally grows both on the ground and up trees. The plant is famous for its large, heart-shaped leaves that can grow up to 8 inches long and 5 inches wide. Its variegation is spontaneous and unstable, requiring careful light management to prevent the plant from reverting to solid green.
Growth Habit
The Pink Princess is a vining evergreen perennial with a climbing growth habit. In a controlled indoor environment, it typically reaches a height of 2 to 4 feet with a spread of approximately 2 feet. It is characterized by robust stems that produce aerial roots at the nodes, which the plant uses to anchor itself to vertical surfaces. The plant produces shiny, heart-shaped leaves with green and pink variegation, while the stems are often reddish-pink. Its variegation pattern can change as new leaves develop, making each plant visually unique.
Watering Requirement
Maintain a moderate watering schedule by allowing the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry out completely before watering again. In Sri Lanka’s tropical climate, ensure the use of a well-draining, chunky aroid mix to prevent waterlogged conditions. Avoid overwatering, as this species is susceptible to root rot if left in standing water or dense, heavy soil.
Ideal placement
Place the plant in a location with consistent, bright indirect light; too much direct sun burns the pink areas, while too little light causes the variegation to fade to green. It thrives in high humidity (above 50%) and warm temperatures between 16°C and 32°C. A well-ventilated spot near a bright window or on a shaded veranda is ideal for sustainable indoor growth.
Special Features
Its main feature is the natural pink-and-green variegation, created by areas of the leaf with reduced chlorophyll. Each leaf can show different pink patterns, from small splashes to larger pink sections. The plant also has reddish-pink stems and can lose pink coloring if light is too low. It is toxic to pets due to calcium oxalate crystals.
Plant Care and Maintenance
With proper light, watering, warmth, and humidity, it maintains healthy growth and attractive foliage suitable for indoor plant collections. Propagation is best achieved through stem cuttings with at least one node and an aerial root, rooted in water or moist sphagnum moss. Pruning is often necessary to encourage more pink variegation or to manage its vining length. Common pests include aphids, mealybugs, scale, and spider mites. Physiological issues like "rust spots" or yellowing can occur due to improper watering or low humidity. This plant is a true collector's icon, offering a dramatic and ever-changing display of dark burgundy and pink tones that thrive beautifully in a warm, tropical environment.
