Description
Syngonium podophyllum ‘Three Kings’ is a tropical aroid in the family Araceae. It is native to tropical forests of Central America to northern Brazil. Commonly referred to as an Arrowhead Plant, this cultivar was formerly known as Syngonium podophyllum ‘Jade’ or ‘Jade Ghost’.This plant is admired for its arrow-shaped leaves, which show splotches and splashes of marbled white and green variegation. The foliage may include deep green, jade, white, cream, and various green tones. The variegation is described as stable and does not require special grooming or effort to maintain. White coloration becomes more prominent with age. The leaves are thin and papery, so excessive direct light can cause leaf burn and dry the soil more quickly.
Growth Habit
Syngonium ‘Three Kings’ is a tender perennial ornamental vine with a trailing or climbing growth habit. In the wild, it can climb vigorously and reach up to 65 feet. As ground cover, it is about 6–8 inches high. On a support, it can reach 5–7 feet high and 2–3 feet wide; in hanging baskets, vines can trail over 8 feet. When allowed to climb, the leaves become larger and can develop more pronounced lobes.
Watering Requirement
Keep the soil consistently moist, but never soggy. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry, or allow the soil to dry almost completely between watering, depending on growing conditions. Avoid letting the plant sit in excess water. Fully moistened soil with less frequent watering is preferred over light, incomplete watering.
Ideal Placement
Place Syngonium ‘Three Kings’ where it receives bright to medium indirect light. Early morning direct sun or late afternoon sun can help maintain variegation, while afternoon indirect light is preferred. Excessive direct light can burn the thin, papery leaves and dry the soil faster. It can tolerate low indirect light, but growth becomes much slower. It suits indoor temperatures from 50°F to 95°F and benefits from a pole or support structure, as climbing helps the leaves become larger. Misting may help replicate its native tropical growing environment.
Special Features
‘Three Kings’ is valued for its arrow-shaped foliage with marbled white, cream, jade, and green variegation. The white coloration becomes more prominent with age, and the variegation is stable without special grooming. It is a vigorous ornamental vine that responds well to pruning. Syngonium species are described as natural air purifiers that remove formaldehyde, benzene, and other VOCs. This plant may cause discomfort if ingested, and its sap may irritate on contact.
Plant Care and Maintenance
Syngonium ‘Three Kings’ grows as a trailing or climbing vine. It loves to climb, and when given a pole or other support structure, its leaves can become larger. In the wild, leaves can reach 1–2 feet long, while indoor vertically grown plants may produce leaves up to about 1 foot long. The plant can also spread as ground cover or trail from hanging baskets. For care, provide bright indirect light, well-draining, organically rich, porous soil, and water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Do not allow the plant to sit in excess water, and avoid soggy soil. It responds well to pruning and can be fed monthly during the growing season with diluted liquid fertilizer. Syngonium can grow in low indirect light, but it prefers medium to bright indirect light, and growth slows in low light. This plant may cause illness or discomfort if ingested, and contact with sap may cause irritation.
