Description
This is a tropical perennial from the family Araceae, native to tropical regions of Central and South America. It is a hard-to-find, large-leaved form of Monstera adansonii and is now classified as Monstera adansonii subsp. laniata 'Large Form'. This plant is known for its glossy green, leathery leaves with natural oval fenestrations that become more prominent as the foliage matures. Young leaves may have few or no holes, while mature leaves can develop dramatic random openings across the surface.
Growth Habit
Monstera laniata is a vigorous climbing evergreen perennial. Indoors, it typically reaches a height of 3 to 8 feet and a spread of 1 to 3 feet, depending on the support provided. While it can trail from hanging baskets with leaves staying around 8 to 12 inches long, its natural habit is to climb upward.
Watering Requirement
Water moderately and allow the top half of the soil to dry before watering again. The soil should be moist but not waterlogged. Let excess water drain fully and remove standing water, as overly wet soil can lead to root rot and fungal problems.
Ideal placement
For optimum health, place the plant in bright, indirect light, such as near a large window or a shaded veranda. It thrives in high humidity and temperatures between 18°C and 30°C. For sustainable growth, provide a vertical support is essential to encourage the plant to produce larger leaves with more dramatic and frequent fenestrations.
Special Features
This plant is distinguished by unique elliptical fenestrations that develop symmetrically along the midrib. A key feature of the laniata subspecies is the glossy, almost metallic sheen on the dark green upper leaf surface and its pale, whitish-green underside. It is highly valued for its ornamental appeal, air-purifying qualities, and the fascinating way its leaves grow.
Plant Care and Maintenance
This plant has a climbing or trailing habit and grows best when given support by vertical pole, allowing its aerial roots to cling as it matures.
Propagation can be done by stem cuttings with at least two nodes, rooted in water or soil. Pruning can be used to remove dead, damaged, or misshapen growth. Common issues include thrips, mealybugs, spider mites, leaf spot disease, and root rot, especially when the plant is overwatered. This plant is considered as toxic to pets.
