This species of Dieffenbachia, described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1858. It occurs naturally from Mexico through Central America, including Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador, across tropical dry, moist, wet, premontane wet, and premontane rain forest zones. The plant is valued for its neat tropical foliage, especially its dark green leaves with a bright white or silvery central midrib. Its leaf surface is matte to weakly glossy, with leaves that may be ovate to lance-shaped and sometimes marked with light or medium green or white areas near the midrib. It prefers loose, fertile, well-draining growing media with good water-holding capacity.
Growth Habit
Dieffenbachia oerstedii is a herbaceous perennial foliage plant with erect or partially reclining stems that may form clustered growth. It usually grows 30–75 cm tall, often under 50 cm. The leaves are ovate, narrowly ovate, ovate-lanceolate, or rarely oblanceolate, measuring about 14–22 cm long and 4–14 cm wide.
Watering Requirement
Maintain the soil in a slightly to moderately moist condition without allowing it to become waterlogged. Water thoroughly once the top inch or surface of the potting medium feels dry, then allow the soil to partially dry before the next watering.
Ideal placement
Place Dieffenbachia oerstedii in bright indirect light, a window with dappled sun, or the middle of a well-lit room. East or west-facing windows are suitable if direct harsh sun is avoided. It grows best at 18–24°C with high humidity and should be kept away from sudden temperature changes, and dry air.
Special Features
This plant is recognized for its deep green, matte to satiny leaves and a clear white or silvery stripe along the center of each leaf. It has an upright architectural form with cane-like stems. It is toxic because it contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth and throat if chewed, and it should be kept away from pets.
Plant Care and Maintenance
Overwatering may cause yellowing leaves, leaf drop, root rot, and base rot.Propagation is by stem cuttings, including tip cuttings or stem sections with at least one lateral bud. Pruning is recommended for yellowing or damaged leaves. Common problems include yellow leaves, black or brown leaf spots, grey or black spots, root rot, bacterial rot or blight, and pests such as mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, scale insects, aphids, and ants.
