Aglaonema Black lipstick

Originating from the humid, shaded tropical rainforest understories of Southeast Asia, Aglaonema 'Black Lipstick' is a highly coveted and structurally stunning tropical evergreen perennial belonging to the diverse Araceae family. This specific cultivar is legendary for its extreme hardiness and its natural adaptability to lower light environments. Visually, the plant is distinguished by its broad, glossy, lanceolate leaf blades that grow in structured, upright clusters from short, sturdy stems. The defining trait of this plant is its unusual, high contrast color pattern. Each smooth, deep forest green or blackish-green leaf surface is framed by a sharp,  pink or bright red border running along the entire leaf margin. Providing abundant bright, indirect filtered sunlight is highly recommended to preserve the intensity of these pink borders, though it remains remarkably resilient in poorly lit rooms.

Aglaonema 'Black Lipstick' is a slow-growing tropical perennial foliage plant that maintains an exceptionally compact, upright, and bushy growth form. It forms dense, tidy clusters, naturally reaching a structured mature height of up to 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm), making it a perfect space-saving choice for stylized indoor settings. 

Watering Requirement

Managing moisture carefully is critical for this species. It prefers a moderate watering routine where the well-draining soil mix is kept consistently, evenly moist but never allowed to become soggy or waterlogged. Allow the top 1 to 2 inches of the potting medium to dry out completely before watering thoroughly. Proper container drainage precautions must be taken to prevent standing water and fully eliminate the risk of destructive root rot.

Ideal Placement

Positions that offer low light, medium filtered shade, or bright indirect sunlight are best to grow this resilient plant sustainably. It thrives in warm tropical temperatures between 15°C to 29°C paired with high humidity levels and good ventilation. Place it on desks, tables, or plant stands, ensuring it is kept sheltered from harsh, direct midday sun to prevent leaf scorch. Avoid direct afternoon sunlight and direct sun, as it can burn the leaves.

Special Features

Foliage aesthetics define this rare variety, showcasing broad leaves with a specific venation pattern of a vivid pink mid-rib and striking red or pink borders framing the deep dark green blades. This low-maintenance plant has excellent air-purifying qualities that effectively absorb harmful indoor pollutants and volatile organic compounds. However, it is toxic to pets and humans if ingested.

Plant Care and Maintenance

Imbalances in moisture, lighting, and temperature are the main causes of common cultivation problems. Placing the plant in harsh, direct unshaded sunlight will quickly bleach, dull, or burn the delicate  tissues, whereas chronically insufficient light can cause its slow growth rate to drop further and new leaves to lose their vivid pink margins. Yellowing leaves, structural wilting, and mushy stems serve as an immediate warning sign of destructive root rot caused by chronic overwatering, poor drainage, or heavy, suffocating soil media mixes. Conversely, crispy brown leaf tips or dropping leaves indicate severe underwatering or a sudden drop in ambient humidity. To maximize health and maintain its compact upright habit, grow the plant in a highly porous, nutrient-rich, and well-draining potting medium to ensure excellent root aeration. General maintenance is minimal, requiring only the occasional wiping of the leaf surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust and help the plant photosynthesize efficiently. Propagation is straightforward and successfully achieved by dividing root clumps or basal shoots from the central crown during repotting when the plant matures. Due to the presence of insoluble calcium oxalate crystals in its sap, the entire plant is toxic to pets and humans, causing  oral pain, irritation, and digestive distress if chewed or swallowed.
