Tropical foliage plant from Brazil and belongs to the Marantaceae family. It is admired for its thick, leaves marked with dark and light green striping, while the undersides display an attractive purple tone. This bold leaf contrast gives the plant a premium ornamental look, making it suitable for indoor plant collections, living rooms, offices, and shaded balcony settings.
Growth Habit
This plant shows a compact, upright tropical foliage plant growing from rhizomes. Height ranges from about 8–20 inches, with sometimes up to around 25–30 inches when given enough space. It forms rounded, patterned leaves from a central base and is suitable for decorative pots.
Watering Requirement
Prefers consistently moist soil but should not be kept soggy. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry, then water deeply until excess water drains out through the drainage holes. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, as this can stress the plant. Overwatering should also be avoided. Since Calathea fasciata can be affected by high mineral levels in water, rainwater, filtered water, or distilled water is recommended if tap water is high in minerals.
Ideal placement
Place in a bright indoor area with filtered or diffused light, such as near an east- or west-facing window with a sheer curtain, a living room corner, office, or shaded balcony. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. It prefers warm indoor conditions around 18–27°C and high humidity above 50%, with good air circulation.
Special Features
This plant is valued for its bold patterned foliage, contrasting veins, and attractive purple leaf undersides, giving it a premium ornamental appearance. The plant is reported as non-toxic to pets and children. Calathea fasciata plants are impacted by the high amount of minerals in water.
Plant Care and Maintenance
Common issues include yellowing leaves, curling or wilting, brown edges, leaf spot, and root rot, often linked to incorrect watering, low humidity, excessive direct light, or poor drainage. Pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, scale insects, aphids, and fungus gnats may occur. Pruning is simple: remove dead, damaged, or diseased leaves using clean tools, and clean leaves with a damp cloth to reduce dust and pest risk. Propagation is mainly by division of roots or rhizomes during repotting, ensuring each section has roots and shoots.
