Aglaonema Red Suksom

A spectacular hybrid within the Araceae family, Aglaonema 'Suksom Jaipong' ,commonly known as the Red Suksom or Chinese Evergreen is a highly coveted and rare tropical evergreen perennial. The parent genus natively traces its geographical origin back to the humid and tropical rainforest understories of Southeast Asia. Visually, this plant is celebrated for its broad, glossy oval leaf blades that emerge from short, sturdy stems in structured, upright clusters. The defining trait of this cultivar is its extraordinary, high-contrast variegation pattern.Unlike traditional patterned varieties, the smooth leaf surfaces are almost entirely flooded with an intense, solid crimson or bright red hue. This dramatic coloring is anchored by a specific venation pattern where matching red veins radiate through the blade, all framed by a paper-thin, sharp dark green border along the leaf margins. 

Growth Habit

Aglaonema 'Suksom Jaipong' is a slow growing tropical perennial foliage plant that exhibits a compact, upright, and bushy growth form. It naturally reaches a mature height and width of roughly 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm), forming dense, tidy clusters of colorful stalks that fit perfectly on tabletops, desks, or shelves. 

Watering Requirement

This plant requires a moderate watering routine, preferring its substrate to be kept evenly, lightly moist. Allow the top 1 to 2 inches of the potting soil mix to dry out completely before watering thoroughly. Proper container drainage is vital; precautions must be taken to avoid overwatering, saturated soil, or leaving it in standing water to prevent root rot.

Ideal Placement

A warm, well ventilated indoor location that receives abundant bright, indirect filtered sunlight is the best position to preserve its intense red coloration and sustain healthy growth. Direct midday sun must be strictly avoided to prevent foliage scorch. It performs beautifully in moderate to high humidity environments and prefers stable indoor temperatures between 18°C to 29°C, away from cold air conditioning drafts.

This highly decorative ornamental cultivar is prized for its unique foliar features, showcasing broad oval leaf blades with a vivid, solid red center bordered by a very narrow, contrasting dark green margin. It has excellent air-purifying qualities, acting as a natural air filter to clean ambient environments by absorbing common indoor toxins. However, it is strictly toxic to pets.

Plant Care and Maintenance

Maintaining adequate, bright indirect filtered light is vital to preserve this fiery contrast; if kept in low-light environments, its slow growth rate will drop further, and new leaves risk losing their vibrant red intensity, turning a dull green. Under optimal conditions, mature plants can occasionally produce small, white spadix flowers tucked inside a green spathe. Common cultivation problems are generally associated with moisture, humidity, and lighting imbalances. Insufficient light results in leggy growth and faded foliage, whereas full, direct sunlight easily bleaches or burns the delicate variegated tissues. Yellowing leaves, wilting, and mushy stems serve as an immediate warning sign of destructive root rot caused by chronic overwatering or heavy, suffocating soil mixes. Conversely, crispy brown leaf margins or tips indicate severe underwatering or a sharp drop in ambient humidity. To maximize health and maintain its structural integrity, grow the plant in a highly porous, nutrient-rich, well-draining potting medium containing peat, perlite, and orchid bark to ensure excellent root aeration. Regular maintenance is minimal, requiring only the occasional wiping of the leaf surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dust and help the plant photosynthesize efficiently. Propagation is straightforward and achieved through stem cuttings or dividing root clumps when the plant becomes mature and rootbound. Due to the presence of insoluble calcium oxalate crystals in its sap, the entire plant is strictly toxic to humans, dogs, and cats, causing severe oral pain, swelling, and digestive irritation if chewed or ingested.
