Description
Belonging to the Araceae family, the Philodendron Black Cardinal is a sophisticated cultivar tracing back to a lineage of complex hybridizations. Characterized by its large, broadly oval, paddle-shaped leaves that can reach up to 8 to 10 inches long, it boasts an exquisite color progression from bronze-burgundy to near-black, supported by sturdy petioles and a central vein structure.
Growth Habit
Philodendron Black Cardinal is a compact, upright, self heading, clump forming foliage plant rather than a vining variety. It does not require staking and does not sprawl heavily. Mature houseplants typically reach about 3–4 feet tall and around 2 feet wide, with slow to moderate growth.
Watering Requirement
Allow the top one to two inches of soil to dry out completely before watering thoroughly. This plant requires moderate watering; avoid keeping the soil constantly soggy to prevent root rot. Ensure proper drainage so excess water flows out freely. Adjust care to maintain light moisture without overwatering, preventing fungal issues and yellowing leaves.
Ideal placement
Place Philodendron Black Cardinal in a bright indoor position with indirect light, such as beside a window with morning sun or filtered sunlight. Avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. It prefers warm indoor conditions above 65°F, high humidity above 60%, and should be kept away from cold drafts, dry air, air conditioners, and sudden temperature changes.
Special Features
Its main ornamental feature is the dramatic foliage colour transition, with new leaves emerging burgundy red and maturing through dark green into deep purple-brown or almost black. The plant has broad, glossy, oval leaves and a compact, upright, self-heading habit. It is low maintenance and is toxic to humans and pets due to insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.
Plant Care and Maintenance
Common cultivation issues include pests like spider mites, mealybugs, aphids, thrips, and fungus gnats, alongside diseases like root rot and leaf spot from overwatering. Yellowing leaves signify overwatering, while crispy brown tips indicate low humidity or underwatering. Propagation is easily achieved through stem cuttings or air layering, utilizing clean cuts just below a node. Pruning requirements are minimal, limited primarily to removing yellow or damaged lower leaves to maintain a neat appearance and healthy airflow. Because it contains calcium oxalate crystals, all parts of the plant are toxic to humans, cats, and dogs, causing oral irritation and swelling if chewed or swallowed.
