Aglaonema ‘Indiana Queen’, also known as Indiana Queen Chinese Evergreen or Aglaonema Indian Queen, is a rare foliage plant in the genus Aglaonema, family Araceae, and order Alismatales. It belongs to a group of Chinese Evergreens that have been grown in homes throughout Asia for centuries as symbols of good fortune. The plant is native to tropical Asia and New Guinea and is used mainly for its ornamental leaves. This plant has an attractive indoor foliage appearance with green, elongated leaves, smooth margins, visible central venation, and lighter mottled variegation across the leaf surface. The overall look is tropical, refined, and decorative, making it suitable for indoor plant displays where foliage colour and pattern are the main attraction.
Growth Habit
This plant has a compact, bushy growth habit, naturally forming a dense cluster of upright stems. It functions structurally as an elegant indoor foliage shrub. The plant maintains a tidy, well-contained form rather than climbing or trailing, making it highly suitable for display in a standard starter pot or small decorative planters on tables, desks, and shelves.
Watering Requirement
This species requires moderate, precise watering to thrive sustainably in indoor tropical conditions. The soil should be kept lightly moist but never waterlogged or soggy. Allow the top 2 to 3 inches of the soil or potting mix to dry out thoroughly before watering again. It is highly sensitive to overwatering; standing water or excessive moisture will lead to root rot. Ensure your container has optimal drainage to prevent hydration issues.
Ideal Placement
The ideal indoor position is a spot that receives consistent bright, indirect light, away from harsh rays. It flourishes best in environments maintaining an indoor temperature between 18°C to 27°C. High humidity levels of 70% or above are ideal for keeping its foliage lush and vibrant. Ideal locations include well-ventilated living rooms, bright offices, corridors, or near windows with filtered natural light.
Special Features
Aglaonema ‘Indiana Queen’ is valued as a rare and ornamental foliage plant with a calm, tropical appearance. Its attractive green leaves show a clear midrib and lighter patterned variegation, giving the plant a refined indoor look. It is described as air-purifying, low-effort to maintain, and suitable for both beginners and seasoned plant collectors.
Plant Care and Maintenance
For care, provide bright to medium indirect light. The plant can tolerate being farther from a window, but it should still receive enough indirect light. Water when the upper layer of soil dries, using the top 1–2 inches or top 2–3 inches as the watering guide. The plant is sensitive to dry soil and should be watered frequently, but it is also sensitive to overwatering, so the soil must drain well. Ideal humidity is 70%+, though additional humidity is not required. A warm temperature range of 18–27°C is suitable.Common care problems may show through yellowing, browning, or drooping leaves, which can indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiencies. Soil that is too dry or too wet, incorrect light, temperature, or humidity can also stress the plant.
